Trail Companion · On-device AI

A hill-walking companion that lives on your phone.

Ask about your walking, your gear or the weather on the tops, in your own words. The thinking happens on your handset rather than in a data centre — so your question never leaves the phone, and answers from your own records work with no bars at all.

Works where you actually are

Anything about your own walking is answered on the handset, with no bars needed. Ask something that needs a look-up with no signal and it waits, then answers when you next have one.

Your history stays yours

A GPS history is your home address, your routine and your movements. Your question is worked out on this phone. Trail and weather look-ups use your connection; nothing else leaves.

No data centre does the thinking

Inference runs on a device you already own and already charge, rather than in a building drawing grid power and water.

How it works

A workflow built for UK hills.

01

Download it once

In the app, open Settings and tap Trail Companion. Trailwise asks first, shows you the size, and downloads over Wi-Fi. Nothing is bundled into the app, and you can remove it again whenever you like.

02

Pick what you're asking about

Tap the spark in the top bar. It opens on the subject of the screen you were on — your gear, your walks, the walk in progress — or asks which one you mean.

03

Ask in your own words

Type it or dictate it. It answers from the tools that subject allows and says so plainly when a question falls outside them — no invented figures, and every number worked out by the app rather than the model.

04

Check the working

Every answer shows what it drew on, and "How I got that" opens the whole run — each look-up, why it was reached for and what came back.

Trailwise running on a phone with no signal

Built for hikers

Everything you need on and off the hill.

On the hill

Trail conditions from a photo

Photograph a flooded path or a fallen tree and the condition picker opens with the type already chosen. You confirm or change it; nothing is filed without you.

Your history

Answers about your own walking

How far you have come this year, which fells you have left, how fast you actually walk — answered from your own records, with the walks they were drawn from.

Afterwards

A drafted write-up

Finish a walk and the notes field can draft itself from that walk's own figures. It is a draft in an editor, always yours to change or clear.

Before you go

A pack list from your own gear

A checklist pre-ticked from the kit you already own, for the route and the forecast — and it says why each thing is on it. It suggests from your inventory and never from a shop.

Planning

What to walk on Saturday

Trails near a place you name, what the weather will do on the tops, what other walkers have reported underfoot, or a loop of the length you ask for. These need a connection, and the app says so before you ask.

Mid-walk

Questions about the walk you're on

When the rain arrives, what it is doing on the summit, what is underfoot around you. Nothing interrupts you and nothing is watching — it answers when you ask.

Working

How it got the answer

Open any answer's working and you see the run itself: what it looked up, why, and what came back. The app does every sum; the model only puts it into words.

Offline

Questions that outlast the signal

Ask something in a valley with no bars and it is kept, labelled, in the conversation it belongs to. When the phone next sees a connection the answer lands there.

Private

Photos stay on the phone

Photos you take to report a trail condition never leave your phone. The report goes; the photograph doesn't.

Yours

Nothing trains on you

Nothing you type, say or photograph is used to train anything. Not our model, not anyone else's.

Control

Look-ups are yours to switch off

Turn look-ups off and nothing leaves the handset at all — it simply asks about less, and says which subjects it can still answer. You can also stop conversations being kept between launches.

Battery

Honest about the cost

Running a model on your phone uses battery, so it runs in short bursts when you ask — never in the background, and never while you are recording a walk.

Open

Built on an open model

The Trail Companion runs Google's Gemma, used under its open licence — listed in the app's open-source licences alongside everything else Trailwise is built on.

Optional

Entirely opt-in

The Trail Companion is a download you choose. Skip it and Trailwise works exactly as it does today.
